Year 13 Maths with Statistics

Course Description

We live in a world in which we are flooded with information. It is crucial to be able to analyse and consider the validity of claims before we accept them as truth. Statistics is the study of the collection, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. Virtually every job requires people with statistical knowledge. 

Studying Statistics will develop your critical thinking and analytic skills, enable you to construct, write and critique formal reports. Statistics forms part of many tertiary courses of study. You do not need to have taken statistics at school to study it later, but many Year 13 students do find it useful preparation for their first year course of study.

This course is excellent preparation for many Maths, Science & Commerce tertiary courses that rely on statistics.

The 13 STATS course offers 16 credits at Level three. It consists of three Internal assessments, one  optional external assessments. The compulsory Internals and external standards have a total of 16 credits. This course also offers an opportunity for subject endorsement and is a UE approved subject. The course offers Statistics standards. This course prepares students for their chosen pathway and/or tertiary level Statistics courses.

Investigate bivariate measurement data involves showing evidence of using each component of the statistical enquiry cycle.
a) Statistical enquiry cycle to investigate bivariate measurement data involves:
• posing an appropriate relationship question using a given multivariate data set
• selecting and using appropriate displays
• identifying features in data
• finding an appropriate model
• describing the nature and strength of the relationship and relating this to the context
• using the model to make a prediction
• communicating findings in a conclusion.

3.8 AS91580: Investigate the time series data with statistical Insight
Using the statistical enquiry cycle to investigate time series data involves:
• using existing data sets
• selecting a variable to investigate
• selecting and using appropriate display(s)
• identifying features in the data and relating this to the context
• finding an appropriate model

• using the model to make a foreca• communicating findings in a conclusion.
