Course Description

“In health education, students develop their understanding of the factors that influence the health of individuals, groups and society: lifestyle, economic, social, cultural, political and environmental factors.” (NZC 2007) Students learn across a range of contexts including mental wellness, positive sexuality, nutritional needs, personal identity, decision making and relationships. “Students use these skills and understandings to take critical action to promote personal, interpersonal and societal wellbeing” (NZC 2007).

At Wesley College, the underlying principles (hauora, socio-ecological perspective, health promotion and attitudes and values) are studied in a range of contexts across NCEA levels 1-3.

 Below are the indicators of what learning at NCEA level 1 in health looks like. 

·       Explain the interrelationship between the dimensions of well-being in a range of health-related contexts

·       Evaluate the personal, interpersonal, and societal factors affecting well-being

·       Generate solutions for health issues affecting individuals and local communities and describe how these recommendations could improve outcomes for those affected

·       Show understanding of actions that demonstrate respect for self, others, and the wider society

·       Show understanding of the ways in which people are unique and of how diversity and well-being can be supported in groups and communities

·       Apply skills such as decision making, personal action planning, and goal setting, effective listening, assertiveness, negotiation, and conflict resolution

·       Evaluate health promotion strategies that enhance the well-being of individuals




Course Overview

Term 1
Demonstrate understanding of wellbeing through the application of a model of health: Students are able to demonstrate understanding of wellbeing through the application of a model of health.

Assessment Conditions
Students may work on assessment responses in and out of class time. Students may present their findings in any media that allows the clear demonstration of meeting the requirements of the Achievement Standard.

Term 2
Demonstrate understanding of a decision-making process in health related situation: Students are able to demonstrate understanding of a decision-making process in a health-related situation.

Assessment Conditions
Students may work on assessment responses in and out of class time. Students may present their findings in any media that allows the clear demonstration of meeting the requirements of the Standard.

Term 3
Demonstrate understanding of personal, interpersonal and societal factors that influence Hauora: Students are able to demonstrate understanding of personal, interpersonal, and societal factors that influence hauora.

Assessment Conditions
Students will sit an exam and all papers will be due by the 29 November 2023.

Term 4
Demonstrate understanding of personal, interpersonal and societal factors that influence Hauora: Students are able to demonstrate understanding of personal, interpersonal, and societal factors that influence hauora.
