Teacher in Charge: Ms S. Nisha, Ms N. Vaike.

There are many kinds of diseases that affect humans, they are caused by microbes such as bacteria, viruses and funguses., they can also be caused by diet, inheritance and they can be physiological or mental. In this course you will learn about all of these types of diseases.
Scientists have a continual fight to keep common diseases such as the common cold at bay. Therefore, the war against human conditions is a about the relationship between microbes and disease. Covid -19 has shown us that we are very vulnerable to new diseases that occur. How did scientists combat this disease? what knowledge did they draw on to create vaccines and practices that have reduced the number of people getting and suffering from this and other diseases. During the pandemic, which demographics were hit the most and why? what was the impact on the health system?
In addition to disease, microbes may also be helpful. They also help Scientists to create medicines such as insulin. This topic will be helpful for those intending to become a nurse or doctor by learning about how to accurately measure volumes and concentrations so you dont harm the patient! you will learn how to measure the efficacy of medicines.
Term 1
This term involves working towards internal assessment Science 1.1 which requires analyzing how scientific evidence along with viewpoints from different groups, influences decisions made about specific, real world issues in Aotearoa and showing an understanding of Tiakitanga. This is a written report and also worth Level 1 Literacy.
Following this we will also then work on internal assessment Physics, Earth Space Science 1.1 which will look at the human induced change within the Earths System. This is a written report showing the effect of change on our Earth System.
Term 2
This term will start the preparation of the External Standards.
You will start with Chemistry Biology 1.4 external standard which looks at the chemistry of materials that inform their use focusing on the structure and bonding of different substances to their specific application in the taiao (environment/world).
Following on will be the next Chemistry-Biology 1.3 external standard of Genetic Variation focusing on how genetic diversity within a population influences the survival and evolution of species.
Term 3
In this term, you will be learning about the different types of Energy - Mechanical, Thermal and Electrical. How energy is stored, transferred and transformed within a specific physical system. The mechanics associated with engineering.
For example, what are the forces involved during construction? What is pressure and how is it measured? Why is the measurement of pressure useful and where is it found.
In this term's learning you will be looking at Electrical systems and how to calculate aspects of electricity such as power, voltage, resistance and circuits.
Term 4
Term 4 will be focused on preparing for the external.
Written report.
