Year 11 Engineering Science

11ESC
Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Students need to have completed the year 10 Science course and have an interest in physical sciences

In this course, you will learn about the evolution of Auckland and how housing has expanded throughout the region. Locally, we will look at Paerata Rise and how Science knowledge helps students when entering a vocational pathway such engineering, building, construction, electrical, drain laying, fabrication and many more.

This topic is all about how the engineering behind construction and infrastructure is fit for purpose. For example, how are homes made to be energy efficient.? Why are certain materials used for infrastructure? How does functionality relate to construction? Students will be able to compare different infrastructures and their functionality.

Course Overview

Term 1
In this term we will look at the materials and technologies for design in infrasture, construction, manufacturing and technology. This includes different types of metals and their properties. What makes metals fit for their use, for examle, what properties do they have? where do they come form and is their use sustainable? You will visit Paerata Rise and

Term 2
In this term, you will be learning about the mechanics associated with engineering. For example, what are the forces involved during construction? What is pressure and how is it measured? why is the measurement of pressure useful and where is it found. In this term you will have a go at using pressure to move objects and constructing your own machines.

Term 3
In this term's learning you will be looking at Electrical systems and how to calculate aspects of electricty such as power, voltage, resistance and circuits.

Term 4
Term 4 will be focused on preparing for the external.
