Year 9 Hospitality

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms A. Morris.

In this course students will have the opportunity to explore food as an avenue for technology. Students will learn how food can be changed, developed and processed to produce different outcomes. In other words how we cook food to produce different meals. 

This is a specialty course and is only available to students that consistently demonstrate the kirangi values, have excellent attendance and a positive attitude to learning.

Course Overview

Term 1
Our Kitchen:
In this unit we will gain an understanding of tools and equipment used in the kitchen; how to manage health and safety; and terminology used in food technology.

Food and Science:
In this unit we will gain an understanding of how food and science work together to create meals for us to eat. We will learn some foundational skills in cooking food for easy dinners.

Term 2
Bake off:
In this unit students will learn the technical skills required to bake foods such as cakes, muffins and biscuits. Students will use these skills in a project environment to create a baked good ready to be judged.

Pathway

Assessment Information

Written: students will need to answer written questions about what they have learned in regards to kitchen safety and food terminology.

Practical: students will need to demonstrate their skills in practical application by presenting a baked good for judging.
