Year 13 Business Technology

The study of business is about how individuals and groups of people organise, plan, and act to create and develop goods and services to satisfy customers.


Business Studies aims to equips students with essential life skills that foster an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset.  It builds financial literacy, interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication, resilience, as well as encouraging curiosity and creativity to find better ways of doing things for the benefit of all. The knowledge and skills gained in Business Studies, and exposure to enterprise culture, can help shape “creative, energetic, and enterprising” young people who will contribute to New Zealand’s economic, social, environmental, and cultural future.

This Level 3 course teaches students about the practical and theoretical aspects of business. Organising and running a team business following the requirements of the highly regarded international Young Enterprise experiential programme is the essence of this course. There are 19 NCEA Achievement credits on offer - 15 credits are internally assessed over three terms, while 4 credits are externally assessed. 

The Young Enterprise Scheme is a business studies programme run in collaboration with the Lion Foundation of New Zealand. 

Course Overview

Term 1
AS 91384 - 3.6: Carry out, with consultation, an innovative and sustainable business activity.
9 credits

Students must carry out, with consultation, an innovative and sustainable business activity. This will include: Group Formation; Brainstorming and Idea Generation; Sustainability and Innovation; Quadruple bottom line; Setting up Visual Dairies; How to have a meeting; Brainstorming and Idea Generation; Business Plan Outline; Mission and Objectives; Identifying SMART aims; Maori Business Concepts; Lean Canvas Startup funds; Human Resources; Marketing Audit - Market Analysis; Secondary research; Customer Analysis; Primary research; Competitor Research; Environmental Analysis; PESTEL / SWOT analysis; Porter’s Five Forces / Ansoff Matrix.

Students will be working on AS 91384 throughout the year with the final report due for submission by the end of Term 3.

Term 2
AS 90848 / 3.6 - Carrry out with consultation, an innovative and sustainable business activity
9 credits

Students will begin production and trading of their innovative and sustainable business activity. This will include: Take product to market; Production process and quality management; Health and safety; Finance - forecasting, costs, breakeven, internal controls; Business Plan.

Students will be working on AS 91384 throughout the year with the final report due for submission by the end of Term 3.


AS 91382 / 3.4 - Develop a marketing plan for a new or existing product
6 credits

Develop a marketing plan for a new or existing product. This will include: Analyse and present Research; Develop product pitch; Develop product pitch, present to class; Strategic Marketing Response; Sales Forecasting graph; Marketing- Budget; Implementation Template; Contingency Plan; Future Monitoring; Market Research completion.

AS 91382 is due for submission at the end of Term 2.

Term 3
AS 91384 / 3.6 - Carrry out with consultation, an innovative and sustainable business activity
9 credits
INTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Students will continue production and trading of their innovative and sustainable business activity. This will include: Take product to market; Production process and quality management; Health and safety; Finance - forecasting, costs, breakeven, internal controls; Business Plan; Annual Review.

The final report for AS 91384 is due for submission by the end of Term 3.

AS 91379 / 3.1 - Demonstrate understanding of how internal factors interact within a business that operates in a global context.
4 credits
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Students begin preparation for the examination in Term 4. This will include: New Zealand business review; Global business perspectives; Specific focus on Quality / Innovation and Intellectual Property protection / Change Management / Business Location.

The external assessment exam will take place in November.

Term 4
AS 91379 / 3.1 - Demonstrate understanding of how internal factors interact within a business that operates in a global context.
4 credits
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENT

Students continue their preparation for the exam in November. This will include: New Zealand business review; Global business perspectives; Specific focus on Quality / Innovation and Intellectual Property protection / Change Management / Business Location.

The external assessment exam will take place in Term 4.

PREREQUISITES

Before selecting this course, consider whether you are able and willing to fulfill the following expectations of ākonga of Business Technology:

  • Have a passion for commerce and business.
  • A desire to run your own business in the future.
  • Keep up to date with current business events occurring locally, nationally, and internationally.
  • Read widely to support their subject understanding and knowledge.
  • Can manage their own online diary/scheduling to meet deadlines.
  • Can manage their own file management structure – both online and personal/school computers.
  • Can work independently both in-class and in own time.
  • Can confidently seek help when needing further guidance/support.
  • Willingly invest time, money and effort to making the business a success

You need to have a very good work ethic, motivated to work with a team and are disciplined to work independently.  You will be challenged to work collaboratively, participate fully, share responsibilities, take risks and be passionate about learning innovative ideas.

NOTE - All students who apply for the course will be considered. However, it is recommended that if you are on the MIT programme, Business Technology may not be suitable for you, due to the off-site commitments required for the programme.


Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS
You will incur the following costs in the development of your business:
- $45.00 per student for The Young Enterprise Trust enrolment fee
- $50.00 (minimum) initial investment
- any other ongoing costs related to the development, sales, advertising and marketing of your product. This will depend on the type of business your group develops.

STATIONERY REQUIREMENTS
Pencil case containing pens – 1x red, 1x blue, 1x black; pencil; eraser; ruler; highlighters (3 min)
Refill pad /folder OR exercise book for notetaking
Diary OR Student Planner
Chromebook – as a minimum. Preferable is a laptop with a minimum of 4GB RAM; 128GB memory, internet capability to connect to School portal to run MS Office suite; mouse (USB or Bluetooth)

Pathway

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN BUSINESS STUDIES

A student can study business administration, economics, accountancy, or become a banker. It is also possible for a student to study marketing, insurance, or transportation. The choice of career all depends on the student's interests
